No jokes

Posted in Home, Shorts at 7:51 pm by ListenMaudy

Last weekend my parents came up to help us install our new cabinets. We went outside to get our drill and realized that ALL of our power tools were stolen. That’s roughly $600 in tools. Here’s the rundown of what was taken:

  • Sawzall
  • Corded drill
  • Rotary tool
  • A ratcheting socket set that we borrowed from a friend
  • A cordless drill that we borrowed from my sister
  • A circular saw that we borrowed from my dad

With the exception of the Sawzall, we have to replace all of those tools. You know the only people that were inside our house? Construction workers. The only problem is that we’ve had all of the tools out on the patio for weeks because of all the construction going on inside. Our gate isn’t locked so the pool guy can get back there, meaning we can’t prove definitively that it was the construction.

Basically we’re screwed out of our tools, and I am so pissed about it. I am finally to the point that I can even write about it without getting completely worked up about it. I’m only mildly worked up; hopefully I’ll be able to get to sleep after thinking so much about it.

Floor decisions

Posted in Home at 7:28 am by ListenMaudy

Not too much has been happening at the house. The mudders were supposed to be done last Thursday, but they thought they only had to do one crappy, rough coat of mud instead of two smooth coats and a final texture. They used a really cheap mud that takes about four days to dry, so that put us back a week. In theory, they’re supposed to be done on Wednesday.

Then, the contractor needs to come back in and finish leveling our concrete floor. That was supposed to be done before the mudding and taping. It wasn’t, so now it has to be done afterward. In order to install a glue-down hardwood floor (or any type of glue-down floor), the leveled concrete has to set for three weeks, minimum. We want to install floors this weekend, so that means we’re now going with a click-lock engineered wood.

We’ve finally settled on a vertical carbonized bamboo. I don’t love it, but I don’t feel like I have much choice at this point. I was voting for small tiles in the main living areas if we couldn’t get the floors we really liked, but Muffin basically glossed over that and wants engineered wood. I’m not sure which would be harder to install. We have experience tiling, though, so I felt better about that.

Another option that we had discussed was using a high-grade plywood and staining it. My mom had suggested it to me, and I had passed it along to Muffin. He immediately dismissed it, but with all the flooring troubles we’ve had, I asked him to reconsider. He actually was open to the idea for a bit, but we reached an impasse on how we would attach the floors to the concrete subfloor. He thinks installing actual wood floors will be cheaper and easier than plywood. I don’t really agree.

We’re supposed to order our floors today, but we need to figure out how long the shipping will take. If it’s going to take too long, Muffin wants to order the floors from a local floor shop. I don’t think that would speed anything up, since the ones we’ve talked to are totally disorganized. We have my family booked to come up to help install the floors. My dad and sister did some floors in my sister’s house, so hopefully they will speed us along to a successful installation.

So much stuff

Posted in Home, Shorts at 8:58 pm by ListenMaudy

So much stuff has been going on that I have been way too busy to post any updates. I have been updating pictures though, so you can see the progress on Flickr.

In a nutshell, we failed an inspection, drove to the city office to pay for a re-inspection, yelled at the electrician for failing the inspection, hung drywall, got a reinspection, moved and consolidated all of our stuff into the back bedroom, moved all of the kitchen cabinets outside, wrapped them in plastic, and finally, started mudding and taping. Then everything went to hell.

Only for me, though, since meanwhile, Muffin went out of town and left me to fend for myself in the one bedroom. That’s probably all for the best though, since no there really is nowhere else to go. It’s pretty cramped with just me and the poodles, so it would be almost unbearable with Muffin here too. Sadly, that means that I have been unbearably lonely, since I can’t be on my own for more than oh, a minute before I feel like he’s been gone forever. It also means that I get to watch whatever I want on tv! There’s always a silver lining, I guess.

Obviously there has been a lot happening, but I just haven’t had the time to post. I also just don’t really have it in me. Living through all of this is exhausting enough, and writing about it makes it even more exhausting. I’ll probably feel better once Muffin gets home, but then I’ll also be busier.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Posted in Home, Shorts at 8:21 pm by ListenMaudy

We had a great Mother’s Day. Muffin had to go out of town, but I went to MD brunch with my parents and two of my sisters and their family on the Queen Mary. It was quite the setup on the boat; they must seat over a thousand people throughout the day. It was seriously impressive.

I also got to do my laundry at my parents’ house. Sadly, it seems like everything is already dusty since I brought it back into the house. I have big updates on the house, and I hope to update within the next few days.
