Runnin’ with the devil

Posted in Early to rise at 1:56 pm by ListenMaudy

I started jogging again last week. I haven’t really been exercising since we quit going to the gym early this year, so I figured it was about time to start. I’ve been getting up at 5:30am and going for a run before I get ready for work. It hasn’t been too bad so far, but I’m still working up to a reasonable running time. I started at 10 minutes last week, and I’m up to 12-13 minutes this week. It will take me a few more weeks to get up to 20 minutes. Then I’ll figure out a route that takes me about 20 minutes and run that. If I get faster, I can get home earlier. That’s better motivation for me. I find it depressing when I just have to slog on for 20 minutes no matter what.

Since I have two little dogs, I’ve been feeling guilty about going running and not taking them with me. They need the exercise as much as I do, so today I finally took Figgy with me. I should have taken him when I first started so we could build up together. He was dragging a little, so I cut my run short for him. He also had no idea of what was happening, so I cut him some slack. He did a good job being my running buddy, and he should get used to it pretty fast.

I’m also going to try to get Lothar to run with me, but I’m less sure of success with him. He’s more like me, and when someone tries to make me run, I want no part of it. I’m really hoping I can work him up to it. I might have to go on two runs for a while, one real run with Figgy and one short run with Lothar (and maybe Figgy) to build up Lothar’s stamina. That little chubby-pants definitely needs to go running. See, just like me!

It’s not exactly 5am

Posted in Early to rise, Shorts at 5:43 am by ListenMaudy

I have been pretty good about this whole getting up at 5am thing. I haven’t fully committed myself to getting up at exactly 5am, everyday, but it hasn’t been going too badly. I get up by 5:30am most mornings, and sometimes on weekends I sleep in until 7am. That’s still a huge improvement over sleeping in until 11am, which I used to do every once in a while.

I can really get a lot accomplished getting up at 5am. I was doing all of the dishes when I would get up in the morning. Now that we have a fully functioning kitchen (!) I don’t have to do that anymore. Let me tell you, that was a depressing reason to get out of bed: Let’s get up to wash dishes! Woo!

I’m still trying to figure out what I should do when I get up. Writing posts helps, but I’m still struggling with topics. Maybe I should start writing about what I read on other blogs, but that seems so boring and can lead to a lot of trouble. Of course, that kind of trouble is the reason I found some of the blogs I read now.

What to do at 5am is just another one of those things that go in the “I’ll worry about it after the house is done” category. There are a lot of things in there.

There’s nothing good on tv that early, anyway

Posted in Early to rise, Everyday at 6:57 am by ListenMaudy

Here’s a real quick update on my January-only resolution to get up at 5 every morning: I totally gave it up. I haven’t gotten up at 5am once this year; I’m almost sure of it. I just don’t feel like it right now. I think it will be easier once it’s warmer outside. I won’t want to stay all snuggly and warm under the covers when I’m sweating through the night under our down comforter.

I feel fine about not getting up, though. I’m not really disappointed in myself because I have really been enjoying sleeping in a bit, especially since Muffin and I have been cuddling in the mornings. It’s been really nice.

I also haven’t wanted to go to bed until late, but I think that’s a negative effect of my body falling out of a 5am routine. I definitely feel more tired in the mornings, but I am still feeling about the same throughout the rest of the day. Then I really perk up in the evening.

I plan on moving back to a 5am schedule in the near future. Remodeling will be a major factor in when I decide to do it. I have a feeling we’ll be spending some late nights at the house, so I won’t want to get up at 5, just for fun. Once we’ve moved, I’ll be back on the wagon, for sure…mostly. I won’t be upset if I don’t, but that’s my current plan.

Mornig routine changes

Posted in Early to rise, Shorts at 5:40 am by ListenMaudy

Muffin has decided to start getting up earlier every morning also. That’s all fine and good, but it means I have less time to myself in the morning. I know that our schedule is getting tighter in the mornings since we decided to start walking the dogs together and then work out, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t miss having 45 minutes to myself in the morning.

Since he gets up earlier, we start our morning routine earlier, and that means less time for blog posts. I still try my hardest to post everyday, but I also have to check all the new house listings every morning. I don’t want to miss the perfect house because I was typing a post that no one reads anyway. 🙂

This is all to say that, although I am trying my best, I might not post everyday, especially Tuesdays and Thursdays since we do longer workouts those days. Better that I get in shape than write a few extra posts, though.

Almost a success

Posted in Early to rise, Everyday, Home at 5:45 am by ListenMaudy

Ha! I finally made it back to getting up early! Yay! I got out of bed at 5:20 this morning. Yesterday, I didn’t get up until 8:30-ish; I totally failed. I am thrilled that I got up so early today, though, since I have to go back to work tomorrow. I don’t have the option of sleeping until 8:30, so I may as well get up at 5.

Yesterday, Muffin and I went to go see a house that will be auctioned at the end of this month. I am so excited about buying an auctioned house. The opening bid is a third of what we have budgeted for a house, so we will hopefully be able to get it for a good price.

The house needs a ton of work. There must have been a lot of people living in the house because the layout is crazy, and someone added random walls throughout the house. The garage has been “converted,” so the actual usable space in the house is way smaller than what is listed. We would un-convert the garage since no one ever seems to do a good job on the conversion in the first place. At least, they don’t at our price point.

We would also lose direct access from the garage into the house with the remodelling we would do, but we would add another bathroom and create a master bedroom. I don’t think it qualifies as  a master “suite” since the house has fewer than 1300 square feet of living space. We would wind up with a three bedroom, two and a half bath house with a new kitchen, though. It also has a separate laundry room, which I love.

I have already designed some alternate floorplans in MS Visio for Muffin to check out. They’re rough designs now since we don’t have exact measurements, but they give us  a pretty good idea of what we can wind up with. Next weekend, we are going back to the house and bringing an inspector. I assume that we will have to rewire the entire house, but if there are other major problems, we have to adjust our highest bid at the auction.

I don’t have a lot of faith that we will win the auction. It would be awesome to buy an auctioned house and have the freedom, financially, to do more to the house than we otherwise would. This house is a little small, though, so I won’t be heartbroken if we don’t get it. We’re going to keep looking at normal houses, so hopefully our search can start in earnest this weekend.
